Magical and Untamed African Race is awarded UCI status
The CAPE EPIC 2006 is the first ever team mountain bike race at which UCI
points will be awarded - the points will be shared between the two riders in
the team in the same way that a road
team would share points awarded in a team time trial. It is also the only MTB
race in Africa to feature on the UCI calendar for 2006 and only the second
cycling race in South Africa to achieve this status,
after the Giro del Capo (a 5-day road stage race).

Cape Epic introduces adidas new honors for multiple Epic finishers
To reward riders that return each year to ride the Epic, adidas and the Cape
Epic have created a loyalty programme for multiple Epic finishers. Riders that
have finished the Cape Epic three times will be awarded membership of adidas
Amabubesi ? The Cape Epic Finisher Club.
"Amabubesi" means "pride of lions" in Zulu - an excellent description for
mountain bikers that return year after year to ride the Epic. Apart from a
special certificate honouring their achievements, Amabubesi club members will
receive a set of benefits including a guaranteed spot in future races - Amabub

Mossel Bay to Riversdale: 122 km and 1800 m of climbing
Riversdale/ SA - Stage 3 saw the tightest sprint finish in the history of The
Cape Epic. In fact it was so tight that the race commissars had to analyze the
television footage in order to determine the stage podium positions. Since the
Absa Cape Epic is a team race, the time of the second rider in a team crossing
the finish line is the time that determines the team?s performance. With a

Mosselbay/ SA - Stage 2 of The Cape Epic was very much enjoyed by the Epic
riders as it was one of the most scenic stages in the history of The Cape Epic
with a hint of African safari. The first fifty kilometers took the riders
through forestry where they could enjoy spectacular crystal clear views all the
way down to the sea. After traversing some rolling hills the more than 500
mountain bike teams entered Botlierskop, a Big Five Game Reserve North of
Mosselbay. There, they did not only experience the best riding of the day with

George/SA (sgh) - The third Absa Cape Epic presented by adidas has kicked off.
At 7:15 a.m. this morning 1046 mountain from 37 different countries embarked on
their gruelling and adventurous 8-day journey through the Western Cape. In just
8 days the 523 two-person teams will have to ride 921 kilometres and climb 16
605 metres ? that is the equivalent of riding twice up Mount Everest ? before
they reach the finish line in Spier next Saturday to deserve the honourable
title of 'Cape Epic Finisher'.
